Why Your Radiators Aren’t Heating Up

There’s nothing worse than switching on your heating and realising one (or several) of your radiators just isn’t warming up. Before you panic – or start pricing up a new boiler – there are a few common reasons this happens, and most of them are simple to sort.

Here’s a clear, no‑nonsense guide to what might be going on and what you can do about it.

1. There’s Air Trapped in the Radiator

This is the most common reason a radiator won’t heat properly. If the top feels cold but the bottom is warm, trapped air is usually the culprit.

Why it happens

Air gets into the system over time, stopping hot water from circulating properly.

What you can do

Bleeding the radiator often solves the problem. If you’re not confident doing it yourself, we’re always happy to help.

2. Your Radiator Valves Are Closed or Stuck

Radiators have valves that control the flow of hot water. If they’re closed, stuck, or faulty, the radiator won’t heat up.

Signs to look for

  • The valve won’t turn
  • The radiator stays cold even when the heating is on
  • The thermostatic valve head spins freely without resistance

What you can do

Try gently turning the valve. If it’s stuck or not responding, it may need freeing up or replacing.

3. Your System Needs Balancing

If some radiators heat up quickly while others stay cold, your heating system may be unbalanced.

Why it happens

Hot water naturally flows to the easiest route. Radiators closest to the boiler get more heat, while those further away struggle.

What you can do

Balancing involves adjusting the valves across your system to ensure every radiator gets its fair share of heat. It’s a precise job, so most homeowners prefer to have an engineer handle it.

4. Sludge or Debris Is Blocking the Radiator

If your radiator is cold at the bottom but warm at the top, sludge buildup is likely.

What is sludge?

A mix of rust, dirt, and debris that settles at the bottom of radiators over time.

Why it matters

Sludge stops hot water from circulating properly and can put extra strain on your boiler.

What you can do

A power flush or chemical flush can clear the system and restore efficiency.

5. Your Boiler Pressure Is Too Low

Low pressure can stop hot water from circulating around your radiators.

Signs of low pressure

  • Radiators not heating
  • Noisy pipes
  • The pressure gauge on your boiler is below the recommended level

What you can do

Topping up the pressure is usually straightforward but always follow your boiler manual or ask a Gas Safe engineer if you’re unsure.

6. Your Boiler Isn’t Working Properly

Sometimes the issue isn’t the radiator at all – it’s the boiler.

Possible boiler‑related causes

  • Faulty pump
  • Blocked heat exchanger
  • Boiler not firing correctly

What you can do

If multiple radiators are cold or your heating is inconsistent, it’s best to have an engineer take a look.

7. Your Thermostat or Heating Controls Are Faulty

If your thermostat isn’t communicating properly with your boiler, your radiators may not heat up at all.

What you can do

Check:

  • Batteries (if wireless)
  • Settings and schedules
  • Whether the thermostat is in a cold spot or blocked by furniture

If everything looks fine but the heating still won’t come on, the controls may need repairing or replacing.

When to Call a Professional

Some radiator issues are quick fixes. Others need a trained eye. You should call a Gas Safe engineer if:

  • Bleeding the radiator doesn’t help
  • Valves are stuck or leaking
  • Multiple radiators aren’t heating
  • You suspect sludge or a pump issue
  • Your boiler pressure keeps dropping

A professional can diagnose the problem properly and make sure your system is safe and efficient.
